What's the difference between military binoculars and civilian binoculars?

category:

Many people who want to buy binoculars must be confused. They want to buy a good pair of binoculars, but they are not cheap, so they will definitely think twice. If they hear that military binoculars are good, but lack the knowledge of binoculars, they can't tell good/bad, true/false.

In fact, there are many differences between military and civilian use depending on the use environment and the person being observed.

First, their optical systems are different. Most military binoculars have marked lines, and those used at night are also illuminated with lights. Military telescopes have larger exit pupil distances, so observers can wear gas masks. To prevent hitting the head while shooting, some scopes have a distance of 70 to 80 mm from the pupil outlet, and are equipped with hard and soft eye masks and forehead protection.

In terms of optical performance and structural performance, military binoculars are better and more reliable because they are designed with more care, high-quality materials and exquisite craftsmanship, such as good image quality, less stray light, and a magnification that matches the size of the outgoing pupil. The shells of military binoculars are made of metal instead of plastic to ensure that they do not crack or warp after prolonged use. By contrast, regular civilian binoculars are poor in terms of tightness and material. Some not only have plastic shells, but even the inner lenses are made of plastic.

Due to high quality requirements, military binoculars must undergo environmental testing before they leave the factory, which generally includes vibration testing, high temperature (+55°C) testing, low temperature (-45°C) testing, rain or water immersion testing, and air tightness testing. After these tests, the product can still be guaranteed to be within the prescribed range before leaving the factory. Some products have a built-in lens body dryer. The air is pumped out before leaving the factory and then filled with dry air or nitrogen, which effectively prevents future mold and fogging of the inner lens. Ordinary civilian binoculars are generally not tested in the environment, or only partially tested. This is difficult for people to understand from the market, not just from the appearance of the product.

Because of these differences, military binoculars are much more expensive to design and build, and therefore more expensive than regular civilian binoculars.

If only used for outdoor activities such as sailing, hunting, camping, hiking, etc., the optical effects of civilian binoculars can already provide excellent visual effects.
